Microsoft Flip has Moved into Teams for Education

If you have been using Flip in your class(es), please take note that some changes from Microsoft will affect your ability to use this tool. Flip is no longer a separate application; it has been integrated into Microsoft Teams for Education.

Flip was a video discussion platform where students and instructors make and respond to videos on assigned topics.  In 2018 Microsoft purchased the educational technology tool, Flip (formerly Flipgrid).  In early 2024, Microsoft announced that it was discontinuing the Flip application and website and rolling the tool into Teams for Education. As of September 30, 2024, the Flip website and application will no longer be available, and the separate tool will be officially retired. If you have any videos stored in Flip that you would like to keep, be sure to download them prior to September 30. After that date, anything on the Flip website or application will be deleted.

Things of note about the integration:

If you were using Flip primarily as a video/audio recording tool, Microsoft Stream contains a nearly identical interface and incorporates most of the Flip video editing features. Instructors and students can record videos or audio-only files utilizing Stream and either download/upload the file or share a link to the media in CarmenCanvas.

If you were using Flip as more than a basic video/audio recording platform, we’d love to hear about it! Please complete the survey and share how you were using Flip in your classroom. OTDI, the office responsible for management of this tool at Ohio State, is reviewing alternative tools and we are eager to share specific use cases with them as they conduct their search.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the Office of Distance Education, College of Arts and Sciences. If you are interested in brainstorming potential Flip replacements, schedule a consultation with one of ODE’s instructional designers
