Facilitating Student Collaboration and Peer Engagement

On January 28, 2022, the College of Arts and Sciences Office of Distance Education hosted a teaching forum to discuss integrating student interaction in online course design and developing a culture in which students are cooperatively accomplishing course learning objectives. A panel of faculty instructors and an ODEE Instructional designer shared their perspectives and experiences with facilitating peer collaboration in online teaching environments

Anticipated Outcomes - Our goal was that by the end of this session, participants would be able to... 

  • Reflect on the communication differences in online teaching from the classroom setting and how those differences can affect student collaboration
  • Identify methods and tools for structuring group activities in synchronous and asynchronous online courses
  • Consider multiple strategies for assessing group work and online collaborations of various types
  • Develop a plan to purposefully create student coordination and collaboration in your online courses
