Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Assessment: Alternatives to High-Stakes Testing

On October 25, 2021, the The College of Arts and Sciences Office of Distance Education hosted a teaching forum to discuss formative and summative assessment in distance learning courses. Faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences shared their experiences with alternative assessment methods and a staff expert from the Center for the Study of Teaching and Writing shared effective strategies for assessing student learning.  

Anticipated Outcomes - Our goal was that by the end of this session, participants were able to... 

  • Use formative assessment to check for understanding and increase student engagement 
  • Create varied and useful assessments that promote academic integrity 
  • Design courses with assessments firmly aligned to instructional objectives 
  • Develop a toolbox of methods and strategies to choose from based on assessment goals
