Multimodal Delivery (Hybrid, Hyflex, Simulcast) Courses

On May 4, 2021, the College of Arts and Sciences Office of Distance Education hosted a teaching forum to discuss multimodal (i.e. Hybrid, Hyflex, Simulcast) teaching in an effort to process some of the lessons learned over the past year and to consider the future of these delivery modes in the College. Faculty panelists shared their experiences and experts from ASC’s Educational Technology team, the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning, and the Office of Distance Education and eLearning were on hand to answer questions and foster discussion.

Anticipated Outcomes - Our goal was that by the end of this session, participants were able to...

  • Distinguish between types of multimodal (e.g. hybrid, hyflex, simulcast) courses
  • Articulate some considerations for teaching a course that is delivered in multiple modes
  • Recognize pedagogical challenges and affordances of multimodal courses
  • Locate support resources to help plan and deliver their own courses

Teaching Forum Panelists:

Sam Craighead (Office of Distance Education and eLearning)
Jared Gardner (Department of English)
Ted Clark (Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry)
Nicole Kraft (Department of Communications)
