ASC Teaching Forum – Designing a “Curated Experience” Model of Course Organization

On November 21, 2022, the College of Arts and Sciences Office of Distance Education hosted a Teaching Forum to discuss best practices for organizing online course experiences in CarmenCanvas. As online courses have become more common, and learning management systems (LMS) more capable, course organization has transitioned away from a model that views the LMS as a repository of course documents to a model that views an LMS as a space for curating learning experiences.

Faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences and university staff experts shared their experiences designing their courses in Carmen and their best advice for shaping a learning experience for students that is engaging, transparent, and serves the instructor’s learning goals for students.

Anticipated Outcomes - Our goal was that by the end of this session, attendees would be able to...

  • Understand the difference between a model for course design wherein the LMS that functions as simply a repository of information versus one in which the LMS supports a curated learning experience

  • Identify specific and realistic changes that can be made in your course to improve transparency and student engagement

  • Situate consistency as a guiding principle in your course design when examining it as a curated course experience

  • Leverage tools and design principles to guide your students along the path of learning you envision for your course

Panelists:

Naomi Brenner (Department of Near Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures)
Steven Lopez (Department of Sociology)
