Description:
On October 30, 2023, the College of Arts and Sciences Office of Distance Education hosted a Teaching Forum focused on the graduate student teaching experience in our College. In this special event, we acknowledged and celebrated the significant contribution graduate students make toward the teaching mission of the College of Arts and Sciences by assembling five graduate students with experience teaching online courses in our College for a panel discussion on the topic.
This moderated discussion provided opportunities for the panelists to share what they have learned as online graduate student instructors, advice for graduate students teaching online for the first time, suggestions for how we as a college community can support graduate student instructors, and their notions about the future of online learning in higher education and what this might mean for their career plans.
Anticipated Outcomes: Our goal was that by the end of this session, attendees would be able to...
- Gain a better understanding of the needs and perspectives of graduate students engaged in online teaching
- Reflect on the changing role of technology in higher education and how this may impact the careers of our current graduate students.
- Consider how they and their academic units can best support graduate students in developing technology and pedagogical skills for effective online teaching
